King Charles’s Office had shared a special nod for the Duke of Edinburgh, who had diligently taken on the task of delivering a powerful message in King Charles’s absence.

Prince Edward and his wife Duchess Sophie had attended the final day of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Sunday, which were dubbed as an “unforgettable” iteration of the event.

While King Charles had opened the Games in Glasgow, the monarch and his wife were not in attendance. Hence, on behalf of the King, his younger brother officially carried out duties for the ‘honoured’ tradition.

“Every four years, we endeavour to come together to celebrate our Commonwealth through sport,” Edward told the crowd. “Thanks to the manner, style and enthusiasm with which you have competed, officiated, supported, organised and volunteered, you have, once again, brought the spirit and values of the Commonwealth to life.”

He continued, “You have inspired us and hopefully future generations. You have also demonstrated what unites us. Thank you all, thank you Glasgow.”

Edward then called upon the athletes from all countries and territories of the Commonwealth for the “time honoured tradition” to gather in four years’ time in Ahmedabad, India, to mark 24th Commonwealth Games.

“Until then, on behalf of His Majesty The King, our patron, and in the name of Commonwealth Sport, I proclaim Glasgow 2026 closed.”
