Queen Mary of Denmark has unexpectedly stolen some of the attention from Zara Tindall with her surprise appearance at the FEI World Championships in Aachen.
The Danish royal arrived alongside two of her close friends, Malou Skeel and Helle Trolle in opening ceremony already packed with familiar faces from Europe’s royal families.
Zara, an accomplished Olympic equestrian who won gold for Great Britain in eventing at Aachen two decades ago, was among the stars taking part in the opening ceremony at Allianz Park.
Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands was on hand to formally signal the start of the championships, while Infanta Elena, the eldest sister of King Felipe VI of Spain and a former Aachen competitor herself, attended as guest of honour.
Queen Mary was wearing a flowing caramel polka dot ensemble, while Princess Amalia opted for a fresh green-and-white striped look.
She accessorised it with a green clutch and delicate gold jewelry.
Princess Benedikte of Denmark, the sister of Queen Mary’s mother-in-law and royal patron of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses, was also among the guests.
