A total solar eclipse is happening over parts of Europe today (August 12). The eclipse is causing complete darkness where the Moon is blocking the Sun.

However, this short-lived occurrence of darkness will lead to a series of strange occurrences such as changes in animal behavior, changes in temperature, wind direction and shadow movement.

Changes in animals behavior

When daylight disappears immediately due to the Moon covering the sun, the sudden loss of daylight may cause birds and many other animals to act as if they were experiencing nighttime. During the total eclipse, birds will often go back to their nests. Many nocturnal animals will come out and start looking for food during this short amount of time.

Temperature change

The temperature can also dramatically decrease in a matter of seconds once the Moon blocks all sunlight. Temperature decreases are usually localized to the area surrounding the eclipse location.

However, for a few minutes you will notice the area feeling cooler, it is almost like you would be outside in the late afternoon or early evening when it should still be daytime.

Shadow bands – Thin moving patterns of light and darkness

Another bizarre phenomenon occurring during the eclipse is called “shadow bands.” Shadow bands are very thin lines of light and darkness which can occur on the ground prior to and subsequent to totality.

Scientists believe that shadow bands result from how atmospheric air bends an incredibly thin sliver of light during the Moon’s passage into and through the space between the Sun and Earth.

Wind speed & direction shifts

Wind speeds and directions can shift temporarily during a solar eclipse. Once sunlight leaves the area, the differences in temperature within that area no longer support the typical wind direction.

These types of wind movements are sometimes referred to as “eclipse winds” and have been noted previously.

Viewing sky conditions inside path of totality

During totality, when the entire disk of the Sun is covered by the Moon, the solar surface will disappear, and only the faint outer atmosphere of the Sun known as its corona, will surround the silhouette of the Moon.

This will give observers in the path of totality a chance to see stars and bright planets in the sky. It will essentially look like a nighttime sky during the middle of the day.

European Solar Eclipse significance

The European total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026 marks a unique event. No total solar eclipse has occurred in mainland Europe since 1999. The path of totality passes directly through northern Spain and Iceland.

While millions of people in Europe will view a partial solar eclipse on August 12th, those fortunate enough to be located within the path of totality will be able to safely observe this spectacular sight.

However, anyone planning to watch the eclipse needs to be aware of the danger.

Gazing directly at the Sun during partial phase exposure without proper eye protection can seriously injure your eyes.

To protect your eyes, use special purpose solar viewing glasses or solar filters during partial phase viewing. Direct viewing is possible only during totality, for which there is a small window of opportunity.
