Tom Holland revealed why Spider-Man: Brand New Day skipped New York City for shooting.
For many fans, NYC is as much a part of Spider-Man’s identity as the red-and-blue suit itself.
However, when it came to filming the latest installment in the web-slinging hero’s franchise, the 30-year-old actor says practical challenges forced the production to look elsewhere.
Speaking about the highly anticipated Marvel film, Zendaya’s husband explained that shooting in New York isn’t as simple as it may seem.
While the city has served as Spider-Man’s iconic backdrop for decades, filmmakers cannot completely shut down its bustling streets.
“When you shoot in New York, you can’t shut down streets. So, in London, the studios pay an arm and a leg to shut down a street, then you own that street for the day,” Holland said.
Notably, filming in cities such as London or Glasgow allows production crews to rent and fully control entire streets, avoiding interruptions from traffic and curious passersby while creating a seamless movie-making environment.
Despite the change in filming locations, Spider-Man: Brand New Day brought Peter Parker back to his street-level roots following the emotional ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the world forgot his identity.
Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned, while the cast also includes Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung into theaters on July 31.
