US President Donald Trump addressed world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, using the stage to defend his foreign policy and argue that American power has delivered results where international institutions have struggled.
Here are the biggest takeaways from his speech.
1. Trump defends the war with Iran
Iran was one of the largest topics surrounding Trump’s speech at the U.N. and he defended the US military actions against Iran, stating they were able to prevent Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon.
Although the conflict is approaching its seventh month and continuing to cause disruptions in energy markets, Trump stated these military actions were necessary for both US and regional security.
2. Open to an Iran Deal
Trump did not speak strictly to military action, however he did indicate that he would like an agreement with Iran.
However he reiterated that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon.
At the same time, Iranian officials informed Reutersthat Tehran was ready to discuss ending hostility and reopening the Strait of Hormuz if the US will ease their military pressures.
3. Message to Putin: end the Ukraine War
Again, Trump urged for an end to Russia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine.
When asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately prior to Trump’s address to the U.N., Trump simply replied “settle the war.”
He seemed confident that a resolution between Moscow and Kiev was possible.
4. Criticism of the International Criminal Court
Trump criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC), urging all member states to resign.
Trump stated that American military personnel should not be prosecuted by what he referred to as an “anti-American” court.
5. Disagreement on calls to slow AI development
AI Technology caused one of the most apparent divides between Trump and U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
Guterres urged for greater International regulation and oversight regarding rapidly developing AI Technology.
In response, Trump advocated for quicker development of AI Technology and for the US to lead this charge, as well as to adopt use of the term “Super Intelligence”.
6. Using US power as alternate to traditional iInternational diplomacy
An overarching theme throughout Trump’s speech was his contention that when action is taken behind the backing of American economic & military might, results are achieved which are unattainable via traditional international institutions.
This viewpoint is directly opposite that of Guterres who, during his last UNGA address as Secretary General, urged for greater global cooperation.
7. Trump also used the stage to talk about America
While speaking to World Leaders, Trump continually referenced his domestic record including the US economy, border security and military strength and portrayed the US in a stronger position than when he took office.
