Walmart shoppers in 16 states are being told to check their freezers after a batch of Great Value frozen fruit was recalled over fears it could be contaminated with a potentially dangerous strain of E. coli.
The affected Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend has a best-by date stretching all the way to February 2028, meaning bags bought months ago could still be sitting at the back of people’s freezers.
The recall covers 10-ounce bags containing strawberries, blackberries and blueberries with lot code 6040 01-6 and a Best If Used By date of February 9, 2028.
They were shipped to selected Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin.
The berries may be contaminated with E. coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.
The Walmart recall is connected to an ongoing outbreak investigation involving organic frozen blueberries supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile.
The FDA says 17 people in Florida and Georgia have been infected with the outbreak strain, with six requiring hospital treatment. No deaths have been reported.
