Why are Moroccans fleeing to Spain?
Why are Moroccans fleeing to Spain?

Thousands of Moroccans and other African migrants are fleeing to Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, triggering a humanitarian and political crisis that has drawn sharp global criticism.

The mass migration that took the lives of around 18 people marks one of the largest migrant waves to hit Ceuta since 2021, when more than 8,000 people crossed the Spanish border within two days.

In video clips, one can observe large numbers of people swimming near barriers along the coast or climbing over the 20-foot high barrier that serves as a fence between Moroccan land and the Spanish side. But why do so many people migrate to Spain?

First of all, it is due to economic hardship. Inflation, drought, and unemployment have affected Morocco just like other countries in North Africa. Most of the people interviewed explained that they were running away in search of jobs in Europe.

The geographical location of Ceuta also makes it a prime target. Being one of only two Spanish cities on the African mainland, it offers a terrestrial route to the European Union.

It is seen as a gateway to the continent where migrants believe landing on Spanish shores will enable them to claim asylum status or permits.

There are political and diplomatic issues as well. In Spain, a recent decision of the Supreme Court of Spain making it difficult to immediately send back immigrants who come into the country via sea has been blamed by some people for increasing the number of illegal immigrants coming into Spain.

The White House condemned the mass migration stating that Spain as “weak on immigration,” while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni threatened to suspend Italy’s participation in the Schengen open-border agreement.

Spanish forces have been sent to restore peace, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will visit Ceuta as Spanish officials attempt to mitigate the repercussions of the incident. Moroccan officials are collaborating with Spanish authorities in returning people who had entered illegally, sources confirmed.
