Angie Nixon has won the Democratic Senate primary in Florida by defeating former Army veteran Alexander Vindman.
In an increasingly red state, the triumph is seen as a blessing in disguise for the Democratic party ahead of the November midterms.
As per the latest count with 99% of the total votes in, Nixon’s lead extended to 56%, while her opponent trailed at 44%.
Nixon is now set to face-off against GOP Ashley Moody in the US Senate race in the November midterms.
Moody’s was picked by Gov. DeSantis as a replacement after Marco Rubio assumed the portfolio of the secretary of state last year.
Moody’s primary election in the deep red state was merely a token primary; he convincingly won.
Nixon, a Jacksonville native has been at loggerheads with Florida Governor DeSantis.
She staged a sit-in this spring to protest GOP redistricting, resulted in the criminal charges framed against her.
Just before the polls closed, speaking with Tampa Bay Times, Nixon took aim at the Democratic establishment and said, “Floridians don’t want the establishment in Washington DC deciding who their Democratic nominee and US senator is going to be.”
“I’m someone who is willing to debate, he’s not. I’m someone who doesn’t have to be briefed on the issues Floridians are facing because I’ve been fighting the attacks alongside them for nearly two decades,” fiercely vocal Nixon added.
Nixon’s big win follows a series of primary victories for candidates backed by Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a group with strong presence across pan-America.
