The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a massive egg recall at its highest risk level, warning that consumption of the contaminated products could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recall issued by Midwest Poultry Services includes around 1.6 million dozen cage-free eggs produced in Texas between June 6 and July 3, 2026. On Wednesday, August 12, the FDA upgraded the recall to Class I status, suggesting the probability that exposure could cause severe health outcomes.

The brands include:

  • Kroger
  • Simple Truth
  • Brookshire
  • Cal-Maine

These brands are available across Kroger stores across Texas and Louisiana, as well as Brookshire Grocery locations in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi.

The recalled cartons have codes labelled P-1950 and 0840962 with Julian dates between 157 and 184.

CDC reported that at least 98 people across 17 states have fallen ill from the salmonella outbreak, with 26 people admitted to hospitals. The true number of cases is likely higher, as many mild cases go unreported.

Health officials also urge consumers to check their refrigerators for recalled eggs and either return them for a refund or dispose of them immediately.

The symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, usually appearing six hours to six days after exposure.
