The United States (U.S.) federal authorities were investigating coordinated cyber attacks that have targeted water systems in at least twelve states.
Although officials have clarified that drinking water has not been contaminated, the attacks have highlighted concerns regarding the security of critical infrastructure in the country.
Sources privy to the investigation report that cyber attacks have now been reported in at least dozen states. Minnesota, Michigan and Georgia have confirmed attacks on their water systems.
Attacks targeted internet connected control systems used by utilities. In some cases hackers briefly disrupted operations and facilities switched to manual controls until systems were back online.
Authorities say there is currently no evidence that public drinking water has been affected or rendered unsafe. The FBI, CISA and EPA have launched an investigation into these incidents.
Federal officials have warned water utilities around the country to beef up cybersecurity and disconnect vulnerable operational technology whenever possible from public internet whenever possible.
Sources told ABC News that investigators were looking into whether attacks are part of a coordinated campaign targeting U.S. infrastructure overall.
