Social media users are sharing a video of a courtroom hearing, claiming it shows Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi’s lawyer throwing files and verbally abusing Pakistan’s Chief Justice Yahya Afridi before being restrained and escorted out by security personnel.
The claim is false. The video was not even recorded in Pakistan.
Claim
On July 10, a user on X (formerly Twitter) shared a one-minute video showing a lawyer arguing with two judges before throwing papers into the air and hurling insults at them.
The post carried the following Urdu-language caption: “Today, at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Sohail Afridi’s lawyer threw case files at Chief Justice Yahya Afridi during the disqualification case and verbally abused him by using an offensive insult directed at his mother.”
The post has received over 52,900 views and more than 548 likes to date.
Fact
The footage is unrelated to Pakistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, or Pakistan’s Supreme Court. It was filmed in the Supreme Court of India.
According to Indian media outlets The Times of India and NDTV, the incident took place during a July 10 hearing before a two-judge bench comprising Justices KV Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe in New Delhi.
During the proceedings, a petitioner appearing in person argued with the judges before passing abusive remarks about the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant and throwing papers inside the courtroom. Security personnel then escorted the petitioner, identified as Prabal Pratap, out of the courtroom.
There are several other indicators in the video too that show that it was recorded in India, such as the emblem behind the judges’ chair and the fact that the petitioner is talking about a case in Lucknow, India.
Verdict:The video was recorded in the Supreme Court of India, not the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The individual shown is not Sohail Afridi’s lawyer, and the judge is not Pakistan’s Chief Justice Yahya Afridi.
