George Clooney and his family have been forced to evacuate their home in southeastern France as devastating wildfires continue to sweep across parts of Europe.
In a letter shared by local officials, the Oscar winner said he and wife Amal Clooney are uncertain whether their home in Brignoles will survive the disaster.
“At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” the Clooneys wrote in a letter to Brignoles mayor Didier Brémond. “As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”
George, Amal and their 9-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, were among thousands of residents forced to flee as wildfires spread through the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. According to the Associated Press, more than 300,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain.
Clooney previously explained why he chose to raise his children on a farm in France instead of Los Angeles.
“As a kid I hated the whole idea of it,” he told Esquirelast year. “But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
He also explained that life in France offers his children a sense of normalcy away from Hollywood. “France — they kind of don’t give a s*** about fame,” he said, adding, “It’s the best chance at a normal life.”
