Glen Hansard, an Oscar-winning musician, who progressed from being a street performer in Dublin to becoming a world-renowned artist has died suddenly at the age of 56. Irish music fans are mourning the loss of this influential voice in contemporary folk music after his death in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
According to his family, Glen Hansard had been killed in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. The family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken” over the incident and requested for privacy during the grieving process.
Although Hansard will be remembered by many as the Oscar-winning vocalist for Falling Slowly, his path to achieving international acclaim began much earlier while performing on the streets of Dublin as a teenager.
Born in Dublin in 1970, Hansard attended school until he was a teenager. At that time he began busking on the city’s busiest streets. A passionate songwriter and raw-voiced musician, the hitmaker soon gained a dedicated group of followers. With that base established, Hansard then formed the Irish rock band, The Frames, in 1990.
With the formation of The Frames, he became a part of one of the largest bands to ever emerge from Ireland. However it would take seven more years for Hansard’s career to reach new heights when he appeared in the low-budget independent film, Once (2007).
Co-starring Czech musician Marketa Irglova, the late-musician portrayed a struggling Dublin busker. While attempting to make ends meet, he met a young immigrant and they eventually developed a musical relationship through what ultimately turned out to be an unforgettable encounter.
Once proved successful throughout the world due to its unique storyline and music. One of its songs, Falling Slowly, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Almost immediately after receiving the award Hansard’s international reputation grew exponentially.
In contrast to other artists seeking to expand their popularity through mainstream media and commercial opportunities, Hansard chose instead to maintain his focus on writing and performing.
In addition to pursuing his artistic interests, he demonstrated great compassion through charitable efforts. For more than ten years Hansard has returned to Dublin every Christmas Eve to participate in a busking performance fundraiser for those experiencing homelessness. This annual event has become one of the most beloved holiday traditions among Dublin residents.
