Meta has finally introduced voice and video calling to WhatsApp Web, enabling users to make and receive calls directly from their browsers without installing a separate desktop application.
The highly anticipated feature marks a major expansion of the platform’s web functionality.
Call history and favorites have been added to the Calls tab in the web UI in the manner of the mobile application. One is also able to switch between different devices with ease due to the call transfer feature, which allows one to transfer the current call from one device to another.
For a better caller experience, WhatsApp has also introduced several enhancements. A new “waiting room” feature allows group call organisers control over who joins, with options to approve or remove participants. This particular feature is highly useful for work meetings. Users can now enable the “require approval to join” option when creating call links.
Background Noise Suppression works by reducing any noise in the surroundings, and QuickHD guarantees high-definition video calls from the very start by doing away with the delay in quality change that used to be there.
All calls made via the website are encrypted end-to-end, and the company has now added screen sharing and reactions to its service, which were exclusively available in the desktop and mobile app versions until now.
This move was announced amid the fact that WhatsApp recently allowed people to book their usernames, through which one day, users will be able to contact others using usernames rather than exchanging phone numbers.
