  • Naga groups observed August 14 as 80th Independence Day.

India’s Independence Day on Saturday was marked by widespread strikes, boycotts, and protest demonstrations across Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) as well as several northeastern Indian states, with multiple regional groups observing the occasion as a “Black Day”.

According to media reports, calls for a complete shutdown and boycott from political, community, and political parties in IIOJK, the Sikh community, and various northeastern regions have raised significant questions regarding the official Indian government narrative of “One India.”

The reports highlighted political divides within New Delhi, as key Indian opposition figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, were absent from the official Independence Day ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The analysts linked their absence to ongoing disputes over seating protocols and political friction.

The media reports highlighted that insurgent and nationalist outfits across northeastern states — including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh — jointly called for a total boycott and general shutdown during official celebrations.

In Nagaland, the Naga nationalist circles observed August 14 as their 80th Independence Day, recalling the historic 1947 declaration by the Naga National Council. Naga groups maintain that their history, separate flag, and political identity predate integration into the Indian state, referencing the 1951 plebiscite as a mandate for self-determination.

Reports indicated that video footage circulated on social media depicting youth protesting against the Indian national flag, while senior Naga leader Thuingaleng Muivah reiterated that there would be no compromise on sovereignty, the national flag, and a separate constitution.

Additionally, the Naga Students’ Federation publicly rejected the mandatory singing of “Vande Mataram”, declaring it contrary to Christian beliefs, religious freedom, and liberty of conscience.

In Manipur, multiple umbrella organisations, including the Coordination Committee representing six groups, the Socialist Revolutionary Party, the Alliance for Socialist Unity Kangleipak, and local Naga student bodies, enforced a 12-hour general strike and complete shutdown, hoisting black flags across key districts.

In Assam and surrounding border regions, outfits like ULFA (Independent) joined the NSCN in calling for a complete operational shutdown, labeling Indian administrative presence as “colonial occupation.”

Heavy security forces were deployed around critical installations and sensitive zones in Upper Assam and border belts in Arunachal Pradesh following the boycott calls.

According to the analysts, the widespread display of black flags, public non-participation, and civil resistance across Kashmir and the northeastern states demonstrate that national unity cannot be forged solely through security presence, military displays, or official ceremonies.

They emphasised that legitimate national cohesion requires mutual consent and respect for distinct regional, cultural, and political identities, rather than forced assimilation.
