King Charles has been dragged into a new debate after Queen Elizabeth II’s former chaplain’s serious accusations.
Gavin Ashenden has accused the 77-year-old of violating the oath he swore at his Coronation after Buckingham Palace’s move to alter the King’s title in this year’s Sovereign Grant Annual Report.
As reported by GB News, the Palace replaced the King’s traditional title “Defender of the Faith” with “Protector of the Space for Faith within the Multi-faith Nation.”
The former royal chaplain appears to be displeased by the move, expressing deep alarm at the change.
He slammed that the King “has deserted Christian allegiance, turned his back on his Coronation oath.”
“Some are asking whether his behaviour is sufficiently subversive as to raise questions about his capacity to fulfil the office of King,” according to Ashenden, who served as a royal chaplain alomost a decade.
This contrasts with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s public comments regarding King Charles earlier this year.
In January, Dame Sarah Mullally revealed that her discussions with King Charles had been “encouraging”.
The monarch, who serves as the technical head of the Church, has shown himself to be “a great supporter” of the institution, according to Dame Sarah.
