A horrifying aerial crash took place on Wednesday night close to the Carlisle Regional Airport in Pennsylvania, where a mid-air crash between a police helicopter and a plane resulted in the death of a plane pilot.
According to media reports, the Bell 407 police helicopter was hovering over the landing strip as part of training sessions for police pilots when the tragic accident occurred.
A private airplane Cessna 150, piloted by the 57-year-old Dr. Paul William Sokoloski strayed from his planned route and collided with the helicopter, which resulted in his death.
Dr Paul, who was alone in the Cessna, was an Emergency Medicine Doctor at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Footage, since made public, showed how quickly the private plane veered onto the same course as the helicopter. At the time of the collision, the plane smashed violently into the back of the helicopter damaging the helicopter’s tail section and main rotor, scattering debris throughout the airport causing both airborne vehicles to crash.
While two Pennsylvania State Police officers who were aboard the helicopter suffered serious injuries, they have since been treated and one officer was discharged from the hospital. The other is reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators are currently attempting to establish why Dr. Sokoloski made such an unanticipated and abrupt change to his flight plan.
National Transportation Safety Board Investigator Aaron McCarter stated that both planes communicated via radio and were aware of each others position prior to the accident occurred.
