World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the 2026 U.S. Open due to a knee injury that has sidelined him since his Wimbledon victory last month.
The 25-year-old Italian is now dealing with a right knee issue and has recurring pain due to a persistent tendon or joint overload.
On Friday, August 21, he announced his withdrawal from the U.S. Open, expressing disappointment at missing the tournament that holds special significance for him.
Sinner wrote in an Instagram post: “Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.”
“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover,” he added.
Sinner has not been competing since he beat Alexander Zverev in the final of Wimbledon and skipped two Masters 1000 tournaments, namely, those held in Canada and Cincinnati, during the month of August when he was undergoing medical tests in Milan and Turin due to his injury.
This is the first time Sinner will be missing out on a Grand Slam since his debut appearance at the US Open in 2019. In 2024, he won his second Grand Slam and was a runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in 2023.
The timing is notable as a day earlier Alcaraz confirmed his own return from a four-month wrist injury that caused him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon. The two rivals, who have won eight consecutive Grand Slams between them, will not face off in New York.
The U.S. Open tournament begins August 30.
