First lady Melania Trump made a triumphant return to the White House Rose Garden Thursday, August 20, greeting the crowd with a playful jab at her own low profile.
She said: “I heard you missed me. Here I am,” drawing laughter from the audience, including President Donald Trump.
Her appearance was the first big public engagement of hers after mid-July, having remained relatively reclusive throughout the second term of her husband’s presidency. An analysis by The Daily Beast revealed that she made just 47 public appearances in 2025, and 38 days in the first seven months of 2026.
The first lady unveiled a new scholarship program worth $2 million in collaboration with the Fox Corporation and IndyCar. This money will go towards creating scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University for foster kids graduating from foster care. The scholarship will be part of the “Fostering the Future” network, which already operates in 25 colleges across the United States.
She said: “Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care. Their capacity is no less remarkable.”
The occasion was marked by the display of a racecar from the IndyCar series, adorned in red, white, and blue colors, carrying the “BE BEST” campaign logo. Participants of this race include Scott Dixon, who is a six-time champion of this series.
Trump said: “The greatest investment America can make is not in technology, infrastructure or capital markets. It’s our children.”
