Meghan Markle celebrated her 45th birthday with a personal touch as her close friend Tracy Robbins offered royal fans a peek into the Duchess of Sussex’s private celebrations.
The fashion designer shared a series of photographs on Instagram, including a look at Meghan’s unique birthday cake inspired by mahjong, one of the Duchess’s favourite pastimes.
The two-tiered creation featured Meghan’s name written in gold icing and a nod to the traditional Chinese tile game with the message: “Love doing life with you one bam bird at a time.”
The “bam bird” reference comes from a mahjong tile used in the centuries-old strategy game, which has become a regular part of Meghan’s social circle.
In one of the birthday images, the Duchess was seen smiling as she blew out her candles while wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat and a statement emerald necklace from Logan Hollowell.
Mahjong has become a familiar part of Meghan’s life since moving to California.
The Duchess has often spoken about enjoying the game with friends, with her close-knit group affectionately known as the “Maj Squad.”
The pastime also featured in the first season of her Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, where she invited Robbins, cosmetics entrepreneur Victoria Jackson and literary agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh for a casual mahjong gathering complete with tacos and cocktails.
Meghan’s love for the game has also been mentioned by friends, including Tatcha founder Vicky Tsai, who previously revealed that the Duchess regularly encouraged her to join the weekly mahjong sessions.
“She’s constantly trying to pull me into her weekly mahjong group,” Tsai told People magazine, also sharing that Meghan and Prince Harry enjoy pickleball and often invite friends to join them.
