Olivia Wilde is done apologising for who she loves–or talking about it.
While promoting her upcoming comedy The Invite, the actress-director opened up about everything from age-gap relationships to heartbreak, revealing how her own romantic journey shaped both the film and her outlook on love.
The comedy follows a struggling married couple whose quiet dinner spirals into uncomfortable conversations about sex and desire. Wilde says that’s exactly the point.
“It’s about a couple who have come to a place of real contempt in their marriage,” she explained. “They are withholding from each other and haven’t really talked about it.”
The film even enlisted renowned sexologist Esther Perel to keep those conversations authentic.
Away from the screen, Wilde also pushed back against criticism surrounding relationships between older women and younger men—a topic that drew attention during her romance with Harry Styles.
“People have such a double standard about what we allow women to do in this world when it comes to romance,” she said.
“Particularly for older women, younger men are still such a taboo… I hope so—just relax. It’s 2026—people have come a long way.”
Reflecting on what she’s learned from past relationships, Wilde offered one surprisingly simple test.
“If you stop laughing at your partner’s jokes, I think you’re cooked.”
Now dating art dealer Caspar Jopling, Wilde says she’s finally found peace.
“I’m in a really lovely relationship now. I adore him, and I feel completely whole.”
For Wilde, heartbreak was not the ending–it was the plot twist that helped her write a happier chapter.
