Scientists have reconstructed the face of one of the earliest known members of our species, giving us an idea of what humans may have looked like around 315,000 years ago. And the result is surprisingly familiar.
The reconstruction is based on ancient Homo sapiens fossils discovered at Jebel Irhoud in Morocco, a site that changed scientists’ understanding of when our species first appeared.
Researchers used a three-dimensional composite skull, based mainly on a fossil known as Irhoud 1, to rebuild the face using forensic techniques. The result shows a man with a broad face, prominent brow area and features that, despite his extraordinary age, wouldn’t look entirely out of place among humans today.
But there is an important catch. This isn’t the exact face of a single man who walked around North Africa 315,000 years ago.
The skull used for the reconstruction combines fossil material, while details that bones can’t reveal, including skin colour, hair and other soft features, require some artistic interpretation.
What scientists can study with much greater confidence is the underlying anatomy.
The Jebel Irhoud fossils have faces, jaws and teeth that share important characteristics with modern Homo sapiens. Their skulls, however, were longer and less rounded than ours.
That mixture has made the fossils particularly important to understanding how humans evolved. When their age was established in 2017, the discovery pushed evidence for Homo sapiens back to roughly 300,000 years ago.
It also challenged the idea that our species emerged suddenly in one small corner of Africa. Instead, early Homo sapiens may have been developing across different parts of the continent over a much longer period.
