Selena Gomez is saying her final goodbye to Alex Russo after nearly two decades.
The emotional series finale of the new Wizards of Waverly Place reboot, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, premiered on Disney+ on Tuesday, August 5. Titled “The Last Spell,” the finale sees Gomez’s character Alex reuniting with her best friend, Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone), and the love of her life, Mason Greyback (Gregg Sulkin).
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Gomez admitted that she’s still coming to terms with the end of her 20-year journey.
“This is it. This is the end of Wizards of Waverly Place, the end of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. And it’s really surreal to say that I’m done playing this character,” the Emmy-nominated actress said.
Gomez also reflected on reuniting with Stone, saying, “I did my last scene as Alex and she did her last scene as Harper together, which couldn’t have been better.”
Meanwhile, Stone admitted that she was “a mess” while filming with Gomez. “I was like, crying all the time ‘cause it felt like saying goodbye to — in a weird way — your teenage self. Like you could go back as an adult and give your teenage self a hug and then let them go. That’s kind of what it felt like.”
Sulkin, who returned as Alex’s werewolf ex, told Deadline that he believes “Alex and Mason are always endgame.” He further noted that he was “delighted to work with Selena again.”
Wizards of Waverly Place first aired on Disney Channel in 2008, following the wizarding adventures of the Russo family. The show’s reboot, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, premiered in October 2024, introducing fans to a new generation of wizards with Justin Russo (David Henrie) as their mentor.
Gomez primarily served as an executive producer, though she made a few cameos as Alex as well. She also directed one episode.
“My hope is that people fall in love with family shows again,” Gomez told ET. “And that they hold this to a standard of appreciating what it means to just have a show that the whole family can get together and watch and hopefully laugh. I’m gonna really miss that.”
