A high-quality bootleg of Spider-Man: Brand New Dayflooded X on Thursday morning, reaching nearly 6 million accounts before the platform took it down, marking the second major studio film to leak on the site in as many weeks.
An account under the name Fredrick Bryan posted the pirated copy at 6:05am PT, by the time it was removed roughly nine hours later, the clip had been viewed by 5.9 million accounts, liked more than 143,000 times and reshared around 10,000 times, with several copycat accounts posting their own versions before those, too, were pulled.
Sony Pictures declined to comment on the leak.
The film’s arrival on X came just days after a similarly high-quality bootleg of Christopher Nolan’s The Odysseycirculated on the same platform, drawing 2.1 million views within two and a half hours before it was taken down and the posting account suspended.
Universal addressed that earlier leak in a statement to Variety, saying it had “immediately initiated takedown protocols” and would “pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.”
Despite the leak, Brand New Day‘s theatrical run has been unaffected commercially.
The film pulled in a record-breaking $72 million in previews, including early Tuesday access screenings, the highest such figure in box office history, and projected to open with $167 million to $173 million on its first day, surpassing Avengers: Endgame‘s previous opening-day record of $157.4 million set in 2019.
Since Elon Musk’s X began allowing Premium subscribers to post videos of up to four hours in length, the platform has become an increasingly common venue for full-length film leaks, a trend studios have struggled to get ahead of despite aggressive copyright enforcement.
