Taylor Swift may have been celebrating a major career milestone, but it was her unexpected take on AI and the future of music that got people talking.
During her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the global superstar shifted the spotlight to rising singer-songwriter Sombr, making it clear she believes genuine talent still beats technology.
After the young artist performed covers of Swift classics Dear John and Cardigan, the 14-time Grammy winner could not hide her admiration.
“His writing is so exceptional that it makes me actually envious,” the Blank Spacesinger told the audience. “I love that feeling. He’s going to be the top of my Spotify Wrapped this year, guaranteed. It’s locked, it’s in the bag.”
But Swift was not finished.
Offering a rare glimpse into her thoughts on the music industry’s AI conversation, she revealed what she tells friends during passionate late-night debates.
“A lot of late-night debates with my friends about the state of the music industry involve me stating very loudly, ‘Sombr is the future, and he does it all on his own, and he doesn’t need AI. The kids are fine,’ ” Swift said.
The crowd erupted as the singer doubled down on her support for the next generation of songwriters, later calling Sombr a “very well-adjusted person.”
The comments came on a night designed to celebrate Swift’s own songwriting legacy. Yet instead of focusing solely on her historic honour, the pop icon used part of her moment to champion a newcomer and send a clear message: great songs still start with great storytellers.
In an industry obsessed with what’s next, Swift seems convinced the future of music is not artificial – it’s already here.
