Robert Downey Jr. reportedly had reservations about one of the biggest creative decisions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actor allegedly never wanted Iron Man’s story to end with Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame, according to claims circulating on social media.
A user on X, formerly known as Twitter, @PrinceUk7pps, claimed that The Avengersstar had objected to the decision to kill off his iconic superhero character and believed Tony Stark still had more story left to tell.
“I made it clear that I didn’t want Tony Stark to die,” the post attributes to Downey Jr. “I believed the character still had plenty of story left to tell, but the studio had already made its decision.”
The post further claims that the 61-year-old legend felt the decision was no longer a creative discussion, alleging that the studio wanted Tony’s death to deliver an emotional sacrifice and major cinematic moment.
“It didn’t feel like a creative discussion anymore,” the purported quote reads. “They wanted the emotional sacrifice and the massive box-office moment, and my objections didn’t change anything.”
The alleged comments continue, “I was basically told to go along with the ending or accept that they would move forward without me.”
“That’s not collaboration. That’s a studio making the final call and expecting you to follow it,” the remarks concluded.
Tony Stark’s sacrifice remains one of the defining moments of Avengers: Endgame, with his death bringing an emotional conclusion to the character’s decade-long journey in the MCU.
